The Medieval
Society seeks to raise university and community awareness of the nature and diversity of
medieval European culture. Our aim is to foster medieval scholarship and camaraderie.
Members of the society receive a newsletter in the fall and in
the spring, and shortly afterward there is a colloquium open to all members. At this
colloquium a member of the society or a guest speaker makes a thirty-minute informational
presentation and invites discussion. Refreshments follow. Medievalists are fun and
provide good refreshments.
On occasion the society organizes a fund-raising event involving as many of the members as
possible. The society's funds are used to send students to professional conferences to
present papers, to obtain manuscripts and facsimiles, or to invite speakers or musicians
from out of town. The fee to join is $10 and this purchases a lifetime membership in the
society. We would like to avoid annual dues, though in time they may be necessary.
