Alaskan
Hectographic Newspaper
- Three hectographic issues of
the newspaper The Aurora Borealis from Healy, Alaska
survive. Serving the Healy/Cape Nome district, the
surviving issues consist of vol. 2, nos. 1-3 (published 31
Dec. 1898-1 Mar. 1899). Issues consist of single sheets of
paper hectographed on one side only, affixed together at
the top. The Borealis sold for $1/copy and was
"Issued monthly, Delivered at expense of subscriber
either by dog team or reindeer." (Healy is 12 miles
south of Denali National Park.) Advertising rates were
$10/page. $6/half page, $4/quarter page and 50 cents/line,
"payable in advance." While microfilm copies of
the newspaper are black-and-white, I have taken the
liberty of presuming the original to have been published
in the ever-popular hecto purple, and have tinted the
three scans I am providing, accordingly.
Thanks to Professor James Danky at the University of
Wisconsin (Madison) for drawing my attention to this
publication.
