Why Major in English?

back to Home

The major in English provides excellent preparation for many professional degrees and for a variety of careers demanding strong critical thinking and communication skills. The major also prepares students for traditional English graduate degrees in literature, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, linguistics, technical communication, and English teacher education.

Nearly 40 full-time professors who are active scholars or creative writers present a diverse curriculum designed to offer a sound base in literature and writing as well as classes in more specialized topics such as psycholinguistics, book arts, creative nonfiction, and technical rhetoric.

Students with B.A. degrees in English from Boise State have been successful in schools of law and graduate programs in English at a wide range of institutions, including Harvard, Duke, Nebraska, Indiana, Rochester, Washington, Washington State, Loyola of Chicago, and the University of California at Berkeley. A number have received local and national scholarships or teaching assistantships at these institutions. An English major became one of Boise State's first Rhodes scholars, and others have won Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Tau Delta national scholarships.
