Class Notes

This is a new column in which current students and alumni can write in tell us what you all have been up to.

I am a 2002 Graduate of Boise State with a degree in English Literature.  I am currently working at Blue Cross of Idaho as a Provider Relations Representative in Dental Services.  I do use my degree in this position, since I spend a considerable amount of time writing newsletters for dental providers and I also write policies and procedures for the department.   Also, I am often asked to review and edit materials to be published for members and providers.I have been married for 6 years (I got married the same month that I graduated from BSU) and have a 4 year-old daughter named Grace and just had another daughter January 28th of this year (Ella).  Jennifer Webster

"Hi. I'm living in Cascade, going into my fourth year. I do the editorial stuff for the Long Valley Advocate, a weekly newspaper. That's all the reporting, editorials and much of the production. That's after 20 years with the Associated Press at the Statehouse in Boise, and previously a co-publisher run with the Owyhee Nugget, the Owyhee County newspaper. I can say the skiing and river-running is pretty good here. I graduated in 1980. Cheers-Dan Gallagher

"For the past five years, I have worked in the Consumer Protection Division of the Idaho Attorney General's Office as a deputy attorney general. My position includes representing the state of Idaho in litigation involving the Consumer Protection Act, the Telephone Solicitations Act, and various other state and federal laws and rules. Before moving to Boise in 2003, I was a deputy prosecuting attorney in the Bannock County Prosecutor's Office in Pocatello. I graduated from Willamette School of Law in 1999 and was the Executive Editor of the Willamette Law Review. When I am not working I enjoy writing fiction, reading, and watching movies."

"I am currently the Deputy University Librarian at the University of California, Merced, the newest campus in the ten-campus University of California system. I started with UC Merced in 2002, three years before our first students walked through the door, and creating a new research library and campus from the ground up has been a great career adventure.  Playing against the California stereotype, Merced is a lot more like Canyon County circa 1980 than Hollywood circa whenever. I miss Idaho, though more so in summer than winter. I have a seven-year-old daughter and three (three? how did that happen?) dogs to keep me busy outside of the library. "

It is always nice to reconnect with a place that means a great deal to me and one which has made a difference in my life.  I am currently teaching English at Mannheim High School, a Department of Defense Dependents' School located in western Germany.  I teach AP English Literature and several sections of regular English, yes, that mean Beowulf and A Tale of Two Cities!  I am sure I enjoy it more than my students do, but they come to enjoy it, opting for the book over the movie version.  My husband and I have lived in Turkey for the past seven years, again teaching in DoDDS high school in south central Turkey.  After many years in the classroom, I still enjoy the energetic young people I come in contact with every day and wonder where the years have gone.  Have a good spring.  We have beautiful flowers and a cool damp spring here, not like I remember spring in Boise!

Hi! I graduated in 1992 from BSU, and currently work for the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) here in Boise in their Communications office, which, ironically, is exactly what I was doing while attending BSU back in the early ‘90s.  I was actually doing an internship in what was then the Public Affairs office, and worked there until 1998, when I moved to Eastern Idaho. I worked for ISU over there, then came back to this part of the state in 2001, worked for the Idaho Housing and Finance Association and dabbled in insurance for a brief time before going back to work at ITD about a month ago.

I was told by Dr. Dale Boyer that I was the first English Department graduate (1970) to get a Masters of Arts Degree in English Literature. I graduated in 1970 from Boise State College with a double major. I had spent three years at University of Idaho as a Latin major and transferred down in my senior year 1968-1969 to follow Dr. Brenner who had taught at Idaho my freshman and sophomore years. I went to New York City in 1970 and applied to City College of New York for a MA in English Literature. My Masters thesis was based on a Shelley sonnet I had written a short paper about in a paper for Dr. Boyer's "Romantics Poetry" course. The two areas I choose to study for my written exams were 1) 18th Century English poetry and the Romantics and 2) American Literature from 1600's through the Victorians. My classmates in the graduate program at CCNY were from Trinity, Columbia, Harvard, NYU and Princeton. I kept my own keeping an A- average and was singled out for my writing ability which I owed entirely to the BSC English department which focused on writing in the 1960's. I remained in New York City from 1970 to the present 2008 and had a 24 year career in non-profit development where my writing ability and analytical ability honed by BSU allowed me to raise a career level of $40 million. My first position was at the American Museum of Natural History 1979 to 1983 and my last two positions were Director of Development for the Neurological Institute at Columbia University Health Science Campus 1995 - 2000 and VP of Development for the China Institute in America 2000 - 2001. I married a New York math teacher and we have two children, a son, Morgan, who is a High School teacher in The Bronx and a daughter, named Blake after the poet, who is a graphic designer and art director in Manhattan. I am now retired and write grants, annual reports, brochures and capital campaign feasibility studies for liberal arts non-profits and colleges. Thank you BSC now BSU for a great education, class of 1970 Sande Hutt Elinson My three Hutt brothers and my Hutt sister all followed me to Boise State in the 1970's.
My City College of New York degree date was 1972, MA in English Literature (Medieval and Romantic Poetry) Thesis: "Shelly: development of a political poet, 1811, 1817, 1819, Sandra Kay Elinson, 1972." Mitchell Elinson. We were married on the BSU campus in the little white Episcopal Church in 1970 and are celebrating our 38th anniversary. He is a New York, attended Columbia, and we met on the Columbia University Campus where I had a summer job in 1969 with The Forum, an alternative group to SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). The Forum received a grant from Columbia to run a program called "The Hispanic and Black Experience in New York." There were two staff members a Columbia U, student Mike Merrill and me, both of us from Idaho and both of us neither Hispanic nor Black. I returned to BSC after the summer and completed by undergraduate degree than headed back to NYC and stayed for 38 years.   I am currently in Boise until May 8, 2008 staying with my mother at 208-375-6808. My New York City address is Sande Hutt Elinson, 531 Main Street, #713, NY, NY 10044 cell 646-283-5069, home number 212 838-8346.

I graduated BSU in 1973.  After graduating, I taught Junior High Language Arts in Meridian and Emmett, Idaho, and in Dallas, Texas.  I also taught English as a Second Language in Seattle, Washington.  I've served in various banking positions for the past twenty-plus years.  Currently, I am the BSA/AML (Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering) Officer for Frontier Bank, headquartered in Everett, Washington (just north of Seattle).  My job is to ensure that my bank adheres to federal regulations and laws and does not incur penalties or fines for BSA/AML violations.  This involves writing policies and procedures, as well as training in these areas.  Thank you.

Regards,
Linda L. Kastner  (Linda Yellen/Beatty/Kastner)

I am using the "Endorsement in Library Science," side of my English Degree to create pre-school curriculum.

At the moment, I am the 3-year olds teacher at a local daycare here in Boise.  My dream is to return to BSU in the near-future, as the "professional student" part of me, needs some input!

I have just returned from a long-weekend on the Oregon coast, a place I love so much and am able to visit at least twice-a-year.

I am living in South-East Boise with my sweetie, Dean, my daughter, Chelsey, 2 dogs and 8 cats!  I am proud to say that I am finally a Grandma to my precious Carter; AND, Carter is going to be a BIG brother later this year!

Life is good!  I send good energy and best wishes to all!
