PRESIDENT'S WRITING
AWARDS
NOTE: The President's
Writing Awards are administered by the
BSU Writing
Center, not the White Pine Review. The
information below is adapted from Writing Center's 2006
submission guidelines.
Boise
State University is seeking student submissions for the
annual President’s Writing Awards. The contest is open
to all currently enrolled Boise State undergraduate
students.
Two prizes will be awarded in each category (visit the
Writing
Center's website for the more information about this
year's prizes). Essays prepared for coursework are
eligible but previously published essays are not. A
student may enter only one category and may submit no
more than one entry.
Categories include:
• Personal Essay. Submissions in this category should be
first-person accounts that explore the writer’s
experiences or observations with honesty and insight.
Essay may be up to 3,000 words.
• Critical Analysis. Submissions in this category should
illustrate the writer’s ability to interpret and
evaluate a text, topic or event. Submissions might
analyze a piece of literature, a theatrical performance,
a work of visual art, a historical moment, a
philosophical argument or a social movement. Essays can
be up to 3,000 words, and any questions about possible
topics may be directed to the Writing Center at
writing@boisestate.edu.
• Research-based. A researched-based, documented article
or essay. The genre and topic is open. May be up to
3,000 words.
• Freshman Only. Any student currently enrolled in E90,
E101 or E103 or who was enrolled in fall 2005 may submit
an essay of any kind on any topic. Essay may be up to
2,000 words.
• Technical Communication. Submissions should consist of
a report, proposal, or any other form common to the
workplace that clearly communicates its message for any
specific audience and purpose.
• Unit Design Category. This submission should be a
completely fleshed-out unit of study designed to be
taught to middle or high school students. The unit
should include an overall description and justification
of the unit, as well as examples of individual lessons
that fit the overall purpose of the unit.
• Opinion Paper. Submissions in this category should
adhere to the format of the short, opinion-based essay
about a matter of public or general interest. The
submission may have a personal focus.
The
deadline for submissions is in March each year (visit
the
Writing Center's website for more information about
this year's deadline). Students may submit papers both
electronically and traditionally. To submit
electronically, send the submission as a Word attachment
to
deannajones@boisestate.edu.
The submission should include your name, address, phone
number, student ID number and contest category; also,
the student’s name should not appear on the attachment.
Manuscripts submitted traditionally should be typed and
double-spaced. Students should submit an envelope
listing the author’s name, address, phone number,
student number and contest category. The author’s name
should not appear on the manuscript. Manuscripts will
not be returned.
