If You Want to Be a Teacher…

In the English education program at Boise State University, you will develop teaching practices that promote inquiry and dialogue among young people and build on the array of cultural and linguistic strengths that diverse learners bring into the English language arts classroom.

In our program, you participate in many communities:

  • Boise State University: work with small groups of peers, engage in ongoing dialogue with faculty as you become a reflective teacher
  • Local Context: participate in service-learning opportunities to learn more about who you are in relation to other people
  • Local Schools: practice teaching strategies for student-centered learning over the course of three semesters and alongside experienced English language arts teachers
  • English Language Arts: learn from scholars who study and share their expertise of reading, writing, and language
  • Professional Educators: draw-on and apply the scholarship of educators and researchers to better serve the learners you lead

Who do you deal with when you get certified to teach secondary English language arts in Idaho?

  1. English Education
The English education program is housed within the English department in the College of Arts and Sciences and offers methods courses in teaching the English Language Arts. You will earn a B.A. in English with an English education emphasis.
  2. College of Education
The College of Education organizes field experiences in local classrooms, oversees certification requirements, and offers courses focused on teaching diverse learners in various content areas and grade levels.
  3. State Department of Education
The State Department of Education determines requirements for teacher certification and grants certification to graduates who successfully complete those requirements. After completing our program, you should be certified to teach at the secondary level and endorsed to teach the English language arts.
